Show last posts or active topics

hi,

"View active topics" does not list any topics no matter how long time i put there,
is there some trick to get it working?

Or is there some other way to see the most recent topics by one click?

view new posts, near the top right, under the login and the date, does the best i know of. however, it seems to have an absolute time limit in it, so that if you are away for a long time, it may show nothing. I think.
